An artist is recruited to defend the frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan… no… wait… An artist is recruited by a mysterious alien to protect this sector against other naughty aliens by employing his will and glowy lantern ring. It turns out there are others in the universe though, with designs of their own and highly similar recruitment strategies. How does that shiny, plastic-wrapped hunk of pepper coated beef in a deli case feel? I now have a good idea.

So… I’m guessing this is like the Lucky Charms of the superhero world, right? Hey. I loved Lucky Charms *garble-garble* years ago when I could get away with eating that shit. Good thing this is as easy to understand as the Saturday morning cartoon cereal it reminds me of. Only it’s not that easy to understand. The knowledge of continuity required was pretty steep. Only because I’m perpetually surrounded by geeks could I sorta glean what was going on. Still, by the end of the story, I admit I was interested. As long as I had an interpreter, I’d love to pick this one up again.

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK

 So some of the more well-known superdudes and some other less well-known superdudes are getting together to battle some evil shit. But before you start thinking this is typical supergroup showdown stuff, it gets all crazy with simulacra, witches, psychics, and a shitstorm of epic… and dental proportions.

 I admit this freely. I am a sucker for good art. The art in this issue was BEAUTIFUL. It was exquisite. And OK. I’ll also admit I thought the conceit was too wacky for me to dig. Turns out, it was well done enough that the universe blending and concept mashups weren’t distracting at all. Also, this comic is spooky as hell, which scores big points with me. Will definitely pick this one up again and read it with a cup of cocoa and Stripes on in the background for comic relief.

ALL STAR WESTERN

 Jonah Hex and Amadeus Arkham are teaming up to solve some mysterious and violent blood letting in the young city of Gotham. What they believe to be a simple who-done-it turns out to be… a bit more complicated.

 If those two names mean nothing to you, don’t panic. I’ll fill you in. Jonah Hex is a western bad-ass who does battle with supernatural bitches, and Amadeus Arkham will eventually establish Arkham Assylum where all of Batman’s baddies will be locked away (repeatedly). Knowing that, you can guess at it’s Wild Wild West setting (the TV show from *garble-garble* years ago, not the movie). It’s deliciously drawn, inked and colored in the most appropriate style. Each moment of tension is literally crammed into claustrophobic, columnar panels. And tense it is. So much happened in these pages that it felt much meatier in story than many of the 52! issues. The plot was also creepy and gory and every bit as good as a penny dreadful should be (it is rated for teens and older). Writing was aces, though. Characters were despicable and awesome. DEFINITELY picking it up again.

I can’t wait to catch up with some more new comics! There’s literally a STACK of reading material at my bedside, which is kinda awesome. I’m really enjoying this new geek distraction, and I hope you are too. What did you think of new comics you’re picking up? What are you looking forward to?
